New York Rules for Intercom Work

Exterior intercom work on an individual landmark or a building within a Landmarks Preservation Commission historic district generally requires commission approval, including exterior work that doesn’t require a Department of Buildings permit. New York also requires a security and fire alarm installer license for covered systems that detect or provide notice of intrusion, break-in, theft, movement, sound, or fire, including certain electrical entry systems. A single-door card-access system that doesn’t detect intrusion is exempt from the cited licensing requirement. A property owner may also install or service a system on the owner’s property personally or through employees under the owner exception.
